A new study has revealed that in popular adult film videos women aren't reaching the big O nearly as often as their male counterparts. In other words, skin flick starlets aren't climaxing as much as their male co-stars. The question is: why? Keep reading to find out why and what tat could mean for women regarding "IRL" sexual encounters.

The Orgasm Gap. The orgasm gap is not only a real phenomenon, it's also bigger than you probably assumed. But first, what is the orgasm gap? Simply put, ut is the gap in number of times women and men orgasm in adult films.

The Orgasm Gap. The worst part is that the orgasm gap in the adult film industry may be starting to affect women in real life. They don't say 'representation matters' for nothing.

The Study. The new study, published in the Journal of Sex Research, revealed that women are not climaxing as much as men in adult films, which you might have already been aware of. However, the orgasm gap is shockingly wide.
Results. According to Refinery29, after examining X-rated films "researchers found that only 18.3% of women, compared to 78.0% of men, were shown reaching orgasm."

The Process. The researchers examined the 50 most popular videos on popular adult film site P*rnhub. While watching these videos they looked "at male and female orgasms in each video, as well as indicators of orgasms that took place (such as heavy breathing and moaning)," Refinery29 reports.

The Process. The researchers also noted which sex acts were providing the orgasms in the videos as well. Each video they viewed had at least one man and woman featured.
The Gap Numbers. The orgasm gap is shockingly wide. "Out of the 60 women showed in all the videos, only 18% were shown having an orgasm, while 78% of the 50 men in the videos were shown having an orgasm," according to Refinery29.

Ambiguity. There were some cases where the researchers were unable to tell if the woman had orgasmed, because her reactions were ambiguous. However, even if you count those ambiguous reactions as indicators of orgasm, you're still left with a large orgasm gap.

Woman Orgasm. Only 13% of women had ambiguous reactions. When it came to the women who did orgasm, 45% of them did through vaginal intercourse and 35% through anal.
Society. Unfortunately, these low orgasm rates for women in adult films can bleed over into real life. It perpetuates the idea that the male orgasm is more important than the female big O, Refinery29 reports.

Representation. Adult films are known for contributing to some unrealistic expectations when it comes to sex. However, the difference with this specific issue is it may negatively affect women's sexual satisfaction in real life.

Representation. "Representations of male and female orgasm in mainstream p*rnography may serve to perpetuate unrealistic beliefs and expectations in relation to female orgasm and male sexual performance," the authors of the study wrote, as reported by Refinery29.
Female Orgasm. Additionally, the study found that when the women orgasmed it was only through two forms of sexual intercourse-- vaginal and anal. However, women can reach orgasm in many different ways that aren't often explored in adult films.

The Study. Fifty videos is a small sample size, but since the videos were studied from one of the most popular porn sites, P*rnHub, it is probably an accurate indicator of what people are watching-- especially the videos in the top 50 section.

Porn's Role. This study doesn't mean that adult films are the reason for the orgasm gap in real life, but it most likely isn't helping at all, and very well could be contributing to the problem. Again, representation is important, even in skin flicks.
