New Study Says Lesbians Have More Orgasms

Sorry straight ladies: When it comes to orgasms, lesbians have them on lock. A new study published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine looked at the relationship between sexual orientation and orgasm occurrence. They found that homosexual women had far more success crossing the finish line than their heterosexual or bisexual peers. For men however, the difference was insignificant.

Researchers began with a nationally representative sample of 6,151 single adults in the U.S. and asked participants about their self-identified gender and sexual orientation, as well as the percentage of the time that they achieved orgasm when having sex with a familiar partner. This "familiar" part is key, because it’s been proven that women are twice as likely to climax from intercourse or oral sex when they’re in a serious relationship than they are with a fling. This allowed study authors to weed out the one night stand sex stats and compare things fairly.

The results of the survey for men weren't so shocking: They mostly had happy endings no matter what their sexual orientation. Straight men climaxed 85.5 percent of the time, gay men climaxed 84.7 percent of the time, and bisexual men climaxed 77.6 percent of the time.

For women, however, the disparity was noticeable: Heterosexual women climaxed 61.6 percent of the time, while homosexual women climaxed 74.7 percent of the time and bisexual women climaxed 58 percent of the time.

Researchers suggested a few different reasons of why this could be true, but it mainly comes down to biology and bedroom behaviors, says study co-author Elisabeth Lloyd, Ph.D. "The big difference really lies in the fact that straight women are more reliant on intercourse for their orgasmic experience," she explains, rather than foreplay. And in most heterosexual sex positions, a woman's genital anatomy can get in the way of a good orgasm if it's all about penetration. "We know that the longer the distance is between a woman's clitoris and her vagina, the less likely she will be to experience orgasm with intercourse," says Lloyd. So for these women, more foreplay or clitoral stimulation would be the way to go.

Since the female orgasm from intercourse is fleeting—only 25 percent of women always climax with a partner—women lower their chances of finishing if they mostly rely on penetrative sex (which many women in heterosexual relationships do).
