What do you think of the heteroflexible label? Let us know in the comments below!
What Does Heteroflexible Mean? Heteroflexible is a term for describing men (women) who identify as straight, but are sometimes attracted to their same sex. However, they don't consider themselves bisexual either because they are primarily attracted to the opposite sex.
Heteroflexiblity. Heteroflexibility is often associated with college age men and women. The label is sometimes used as a joke or simply a term for being young and curious. However, for some who don't find that other labels quite fit their sexual orientation, heteroflexibility is very real.
Homoflexibility. Alternatively, homoflexibility refers to those who mainly identify as homosexual, but are sometimes attracted to the opposite sex.
Bi-Curious. Both heteroflexible and homoflexible labels are associated with bi-curiosity and experimentation. However, while that may be true for some, bi-curious has its own label for a reason. Heteroflexibility is a label on its own.
Surveys. According to national surveys in both the US and Canada, "3 to 4 percent of male teenagers, when given the choice to select a term that best describes their sexual feelings, desires, and behaviors, opt for 'mostly' or 'predominantly' heterosexual. With '100% heterosexual' being the largest assumed identity, 'mostly-heterosexual' was the first runner up in self-identification," Wikipedia says.
Study. Of 160 men included in a 2008 and 2009 study, "nearly one in eight reported same-sex attractions, fantasies, and crushes." The majority noticed their feelings early on such as in high school, and some realized them more recently.
Origin. So, how did the term heteroflexibility come to be? People are often pressured to put a label on their sexuality, and when your sexuality doesn't fall into any of the mainstream categories, new terms start to pop up — like this one.
Not Bisexual. Some people may assume it's easier to identify as bisexual if you find any attraction the same sex as well as opposite sex. However, bisexuality is much different. Bisexuals are attracted to both sexes equally.
Heteroflexible. There's definitely not an equal balance to heteroflexibility. It's a person who more often than not finds themselves attracted to the opposite sex, but doesn't want to be pigeonholed in that label, because they are SOMETIMES attracted to the same sex.
Misconceptions. Unfortunately, heteroflexibility isn't a widely accepted term — some don't even know about the label and others have likened it to a trend. One of the most common misconceptions is that they are just confused.
Confused or Hiding. People's assumptions about heteroflexible men tend to discredit the label. Some chalk up the label to being confused or unsure of what they truly identify as. Some people think that heteroflexibility is a way to stay half way in the closet when you truly identify as gay.
Maybe They Are Confused. Identifying as heteroflexible might be a person's way of trying to figure out what they identify with. They may not feel any of the other labels are right, but want to know what they are. They want to have answers.
Attention. Sadly, some people believe the term is an attention grab. Contrary to that belief, heteroflexible men are not trying to seek attention by choosing to label their otherwise label-less sexual orientation.
Finding a Partner. And on top of trying to figure out your sexual orientation label and dealing with inaccurate misconceptions, it can also be difficult for the heteroflexible to find a partner. "Heteroflexible subjects, generally being associated with confusion and indecision, find minimal support from partners. They’re always insecure about their partner’s preferences, and berate them along the lines of the myths stated above," New Love Times reports.
New Times. It's 2017 and people are more accepting of their sexualities and more willing to openly identify as something other than completely straight—which is great. So, the heteroflexible label may sound complex, but sexuality isn't always so simple.
